We encourage students and families to start with savings, grants, scholarships, and federal student loans to pay for college.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You should always exhaust your federal aid options before applying for a private loan, because these loans are sometimes more difficult to obtain and can often end up being significantly more costly to you in the end. Private loans are designed to supplement federal loan programs. Private loans are also known as ‘alternative loans’ and the terms often vary considerably based on the lender and borrower credit histories.

You should review the benefits of your federal student loan; it may offer specific benefits that a private refinance/consideration loan may not offer. If you work in the private sector, are in the military or taking advantage of a federal department of relief program, such as income-based repayment or public service forgiveness, you may not want to refinance, as these benefits do not transfer to private refinance/consolidation loans.
